Cute as a button!
Just a quick post to show you some button cookies I made recently, using directions and templates I found over at E.A.T. (Emily and Amy’s Treats). Their version is way cuter — the buttons are bright and colorful.
I did make a few changes in my version. For one thing, I covered the cards with wax paper. My cookies were going through the mail and I worried that plain cardstock would develop grease spots after a while. Plus, it is more food-safe to have the cookies on wax paper. (As a side-note, I wasn’t nearly as worried about breakage-in-transit as I normally am when I mail cookies. Being tethered to the cards kept them from sliding around!)
Next, I used a glass to press the middles down a little, instead of just imprinting a narrow ring the way Emily and Amy did. While it does look more “authentic” that way, I probably wouldn’t do it next time, because the middles of the cookies overbaked, since they were thinner than the edges.
To make the holes, I used a drinking straw instead of a toothpick. You could also use a round cake-decorating icing tip to make the holes.
Last, I used food-safe twist ties to attach the cookies to the cards. I didn’t twist the ties, though. I just folded them over on the back, to hold the cookies in place. I made tiny slits first with the tip of a sharp knife, before inserting the twist ties.
This was a fun, quick and easy project. I’m thinking button cookies might make cute baby shower favors, if you did the buttons in pink and blue!
