Knot Trivet

Rope Pot Rest

Knot trivet2

There is something so fascinating about complicated knots. I have a ring that is a Celtic knot, and I love the way the lines double back on themselves and intertwine with the other lines in such mysterious but symmetrical ways. Like M.C. Escher art… Or mathematics brought to life.

I ran across a tutorial at Design Sponge, showing how to make a trivet out of knotted rope and it had that same appeal. In my youth, I’d done some macramé, and this appeared to be a similar craft. I planned to send a nautical-themed Christmas gift to my sister in Maine, and I thought this would be a perfect addition to the gift. It would also be nice for a wedding, with a card that said something about “tying the knot” and the way that good marriage is like the rope, intertwining and inseparable.

The tutorial showed different colors of rope, but I wanted mine to be white. I also felt strongly that it needed to be made out of natural fibers (cotton or linen) rather than other materials — wouldn’t a nylon rope melt and ruin the bottom of a large, hot pot?

But after going to every “rope store” (hardware and home improvement stores) in town, I discovered that it is almost impossible to find 100% natural fiber rope, and when you do find it, it is never white. I found some suitable “chunky trim” at a fabric store and used that. But the scale was all wrong. My “trivet” turned out more the size of a coaster! Oh, well. I like how it turned out, anyway.
